ex gratia pension payment : Ex gratia is a Latin phrase meaning as a favor; not legally necessary, and ex gratia payment is payment made by one who recognizes no legal obligation to pay but who makes payment to avoid greater expense as in the case of a settlement by an insurance company to avoid costs of suit; that is a payment without legal consideration. Hence, ex gratia pension payment is a pension made, for example by a business concern, to someone out of favor for him/her and without the former being legally obliged to do so
